The 40.

The Land Cruiser everyone wants and few build properly. A diesel 40 Series taken back to a rolling chassis and rebuilt from the ground up.

Everyone loves a 40. Far fewer are willing to build one properly, because a good 40 is not a paint job over old problems. It is a chassis, a driveline and a suspension sorted from the ground up, then a body put back on top. This diesel 40 is being built exactly that way, and right now it sits as a rolling chassis with the hard engineering already done.

Build in progress

The objective

A 40 that gets used, not one that lives on a trailer. That means the parts under the body get the attention first: the suspension, the axles, the steering and the chassis. Get those right and the rest is finishing. Get those wrong and no amount of paint saves it.

The engineering so far

The vehicle was stripped to a bare chassis and the running gear rebuilt. It now sits on a coil conversion, front and rear, in place of the original leaves. Coils buy articulation and ride quality that a leaf 40 simply cannot match off road, but only if the geometry, the mounts and the links are done properly rather than bolted on from a kit. The axles were rebuilt, the steering renewed, and the chassis brought back to a standard worth building on.

"A good 40 is built from the chassis up. Sort the suspension, axles and steering first. The body is the easy part."

Where it is now

It is a rolling chassis on fresh steels and all-terrains, body in primer and waiting its turn. This is the honest middle of a proper build, and it is the part most workshops never show. We document it as it goes, because the engineering underneath is the whole point of the car.
