The V8 80.

An 80 Series Land Cruiser given the V8 it always deserved: the 2UZ 4.7 from a 100 Series, on the 80's own chassis, finished in a red you cannot ignore.

The 80 Series is one of the best 4x4 platforms Toyota ever built, and one of the most commonly ruined by half-measures. This one went the other way. A customer brought us an 80 and wanted real V8 power without turning it into a bitsa. We fitted the 2UZ-FE 4.7 litre V8 from a 100 Series, kept it on the original 80 chassis, and rewired and refinished the whole thing to a standard that holds up under the paint.

The objective

Give an 80 Series modern V8 torque and refinement while keeping it honest. No shortcuts, no borrowed identity, and a finish that matches the mechanical work underneath.

The engineering decisions

There is a common shortcut for a V8 80: take a whole 100 Series chassis and drivetrain and drop an 80 body on top of it. It is quicker, and it is not what this is. We kept the vehicle on its original 80 Series chassis and brought the 2UZ V8 to it, which is more work and the right way to do it. It stays a proper full-time four-wheel drive. No part-time compromise, no novelty driveline.

A swap like this lives or dies on the parts you do not see. Engine mounting, cooling, and the entire electrical side had to be sorted so the 2UZ runs the way it does in the car it came from, not as a bodged-in lump. The dashboard and console were reworked to suit, and the wiring was done properly rather than patched.

"The easy version is an 80 body on a 100 chassis. This is a 2UZ brought to the original 80 chassis. More work, and the only way worth doing it."

Fabrication and finishing

Beyond the driveline there was a long list of fabrication, interior integration and detail work to make everything sit and function as one vehicle rather than a collection of parts. It was then refinished in Tesla Ultra Red, a colour that suits a truck with this much V8 behind the badge, and put back together as a complete, usable 80.

Where it is now

Finished and back with its owner: an 80 Series that drives like it left the factory with a V8, on its own chassis, wearing a colour you will hear before you see. It is exactly the kind of build the 80 platform deserves and rarely gets.

Thinking about a V8 swap?

Tell us the vehicle and what you want out of it. We will tell you honestly what it takes to do it once and do it right, not the shortcut version.
